GETTING ORGANIZED

SEVERAL WEEKS IN ADVANCE

  • Arrange for medical and dental records to be forwarded to your new physicians.  Obtain copies of your prescription medicines and eyeglasses.
  • Cancel/transfer memberships in religious, civic and social organizations.
  • Transfer your pet records to their new vet and keep shot records with you incase Fido decides to escape.
  • Make a list of those you want to notify of your new address, i.e. magazine publishers, attorney, insurance companies, relatives, friends, credit card companies, etc.
  • Register your children for school and arrange for transcripts to be forwarded to the new school.  Keep your immunization records handy for registration.
  • Use up your frozen food.  Movers do not ship perishables.
  • Schedule movers, make travel plans.
TWO WEEKS BEFORE MOVING
  • Set up new bank account.
  • Close local charge accounts.
  • Close your bank accounts. Empty safe deposit box.
  • Notify utility companies of the date you want service disconnected and request refund of any deposits.  Electricity, water, sewage, gas, garbage pick up, cable, satellite, security systems.
  • Notify the post office of your new address.
  • Find out requirements for driver's license, voter's registration.
  • Clean out the attic, basement and garage.
  • Discontinue home delivery of newspaper, milk, etc.
  • Return borrowed items, videos, library books. Retrieve loaned out items.
  • Have your vehicle checked.

ONE WEEK BEFORE MOVING

  • Arrange to take valuables with you or send ahead.
  • Set aside toys children want to have with them on the trip.
  • Set aside special handling items for movers.
  • Prepare the "load last" list.
  • Drain gasoline from the lawnmower and dispose of flammable materials.
  • Pick up articles of clothing at the dry cleaners.

DAY BEFORE MOVING

  • Have someone available to supervise packing.
  • Pack valuables you intend to take with you.
  • Label cartons as to contents and which room they go to in new home.
  • Empty, defrost and clean the freezer and refrigerator.
  • Notify police your home will be vacant.
  • Notify close friend of your itinerary in case of an emergency.
